Exploring ancient history with cheap holidays to Crete

I’ve been looking for a Mediterranean island holiday that offers a relaxing atmosphere and beautiful beaches as well as a taste of the history and culture that Greece is famous for. I have heard that Crete is a good place to visit for a dose of ancient history and there seem to be plenty of cheap holidays to Crete at the moment. The Knossos ruins in Heraklion are a particular attraction. This is the site of an ancient Minoan palace, which was also the legendary prison of the mythical Minotaur - the infamous half-man, half-bull creature that is found in Greek mythology. The palace has undergone quite extensive restoration so unlike some other ancient sites on the islands there is apparently plenty to see.
