Basement Started Leaking

We have lived in our home for five years. Within the last six months we have noticed a musty moldy smell when we go down into the basement. We search the pipes for leaks and haven’t found any but what my husband did notice is the back wall seems to be absorbing water from the outside. He thinks may be a root of the tree has dug into the side of that wall and cause tiny cracks. We are calling a company to come out today to give us an estimate on waterproofing basement wall. We don’t know if this is going to be a simple fix or a very expensive one.
