The Safety Of Fiber And Herbal Laxatives
October 29th, 2009 by admin
Herbal laxatives are generally regarded as being safe to use, although there are certain instances where specific herbs should be avoided in favor of others. For example, the irritating herbal laxatives such as senna and some forms of rhubarb can lead to hemorrhoids. They generally work by means of anthranoids that stimulate the intestinal system via the nervous system, although cascara is one of the milder forms of these.
At one time castor oil was used as a laxative, but it is now known to cause an imbalance of minerals in the body, and can also lead to a form of dehydration. Psyllium husk fiber, on the other hand, is regarded as being relatively innocuous, and a very effective herbal laxative for continual use, although some believe that it causes an allergy. There have been reported cases when herbal laxatives have caused severe reactions such as vomiting, severe stomach cramps, rectal bleeding and fainting, but these have generally been associated with large overdoses of the herb concerned.
Although you should refer to your doctor prior to taking any treatment for constipation, herbal remedies for the condition are normally considered safe to take with only mild side-effects if any at all when used for short periods of time. Look for your local or internet health food store for a good quality herbal or fiber laxative.
