Sesamoiditis is a painful condition that occurs to the two small bones under the base of the big toe. These are called the sesamoid bones. The function of them is to be like mini knee caps and act a s a pully for te tendon. Imagine what would happen if you spent all day walking around on your knee caps. Would they get painful? This is what sesamoiditis is – it is an overuse inflammation to those small knee cap like bones. Treatment usually involves padding and foot orthotics to get pressure of the painful area. This is usually successful. Occasionally, sesamoiditis surgery is needed. This involves the removal of the two little bones.
